|Description:||The J. Franklin Jameson Fellowship in American History is offered annually to support significant research in the Library of Congress collections by history scholars at an early stage in their careers. Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent degree, have received this degree within the past seven years, and not have published or have accepted for publication a book-length historical work. Nontenured faculty, public historians, independent scholars, and two-year faculty are encouraged to apply.|
Eligible projects in American history must be ones for which the Library of Congress’s general and special collections offer unique research support. The fellowship is awarded for at least two, but no more than three, months of full-time research, with working space provided by the Library of Congress. The stipend includes travel expenses.
Before the fellowship conclusion, the fellow must summarize research results at a professional gathering arranged by the sponsors. Fellows are not required to complete their projects during the tenure of the fellowship or to publish their results as a discrete work.
All application materials and letters of recommendation (sent directly by the individuals) must be emailed by the deadline, with the subject line “Jameson Fellowship: [Applicant Name].” Selection is by an American Historical Association committee, in consultation with Library of Congress officers who advise on the strength of library holdings to sustain a research project. The winner and an alternate will be announced in June.
