Teachers of any level are eligible for this annual award. The prize includes a two-week professional development course in Germany provided by the Goethe-Institut, which offers award recipients the opportunity to gain new teaching techniques, as well as experiences with German culture, society, and language. Selection criteria include evidence of learner-centered instruction, communication-based instruction, use of new media in instruction, intercultural connections, and proficiency-based assessment.

School administrators are encouraged to nominate outstanding teachers of German.
