|Description:||The New York Life Excellence in Summer Learning Award is given annually to recognize outstanding summer programs that demonstrate excellence in accelerating academic achievement and promoting healthy development for young people. Previous award winners are not eligible to apply.|
Eligible programs must be held during the summer months; serve young people in prekindergarten through grade 12; and be developed by a public or private organization or agency (e.g., schools, community-based organizations, libraries, universities, and faith-based organizations), or a collaboration of two or more organizations or agencies. Other requirements include operating for at least two summers; having paid staff responsible for administration, implementation, and finances; having the central program goals of accelerating academic achievement and promoting healthy development; and a demonstrated strong commitment to equity and expanding access to summer learning in high-poverty communities. For programs that are a collaboration, only one application should be submitted representing all sponsors.
Awards are made based on an application and interview process that elicits information on a programís history, mission, goals, operations, management, staff development, partnerships, results, and sustainability. All programs are measured against the Summer Learning Program Quality Assessment (SLPQA). Based on the initial application submitted, candidates may be invited to submit additional information. Promising applicants are then interviewed by phone and finalists are visited on site. Programs that serve disadvantaged communities or populations are given additional consideration.
