Description:The Tony Hawk Foundation promotes high-quality, public skateboard parks to encourage healthy physical activity. The foundation awards grants to support the design and construction of new skateparks, with emphasis on parks in low-income areas of the US. Applicants must be qualified nonprofit organizations or state or local agencies, including public school systems and public projects.

The foundation primarily considers skatepark projects that meet the following criteria: located in areas without skateboarding facilities and with a high population of low-income or at-risk youth; designed and built from concrete by qualified, experienced skatepark contractors; design has a creative mix of street obstacles and transition terrain; local skaters included throughout the planning, fundraising, and design process; and strong grassroots commitment, particularly in terms of fundraising by local skateboarders and other community groups.

Also important are these requirements: no entrance fee, open daily during daylight hours, do not require skaters or their parents to sign waivers, and encourage skaters to look after their own and others’ safety without over-regulating use of the park. The foundation provides detailed information to guide skatepark planning and development.

The application form is available to access and additional required supporting documents are described on the website. The application form must be submitted online. Supporting documents may be mailed to the foundation and must be postmarked no later than one business day following the application deadline.

Grant recipients that have received no more than $1,000 from the Tony Hawk Foundation may reapply for another grant.
