Description:The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles (JFLA) funds small grants to support education-related Japanese language contests, such as speech, quiz, essay, and other types of competitive events designed to motivate Japanese language learners in multiple schools and promote Japanese language education in the contest region.

Grants may be used to cover expenses related to judging (honoraria, transportation, and accommodations for judges); facilities fees for the event (rental and equipment); nonmonetary prizes for contestants; production costs for contest programs, handouts, and flyers; and group transportation costs for participants and student audiences.

Applications are judged on the role and influence of the applying institution or organization in the contest region, benefits to the regionís Japanese language learners and impact on the Japanese language education program through the project, number of contestants and participating schools, need for financial support from the JFLA and potential to raise funds from other sources, and previous grant history.

Eligible applicants are nonprofit educational institutions and organizations involved in Japanese language education. Interested institutions and organizations must send an email to the JFLA informing of their intention to apply for a contest grant before submitting application materials. The application is available online. Application materials must be submitted by postal mail or email.
